In Malaysia, the Tiger Orchid or Orkid Harimau is the largest and rare flowering species found throughout Malaysia and Southeast Asia. It is also one of the most beautiful orchids to some collectors.
Having told tales that someone grew a tiger orchid for 10 years and never did flower once, it smiled at me when the species I bought many years ago in the 90s and grew it for two years before eventual flowering. Not once, but twice.

This species of giant orchid is also called Grammatophyllum speciosum and is found mainly throughout Southeast Asia. You can find them in countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Borneo Island.
They also go by various names, which include;
- Giant Orchid
- Tiger Orchid
- Sugar Cane Orchid
- Queen of the Orchids
Wikipedia also claims that the tiger orchid is native to Indonesia and holds the Guinness world record for the world’s tallest orchid species. The record was measured to a whopping 25 feet in height or seven meters tall.
These beautiful massive orchids are best in the ground and can get really large. The picture of the tiger orchid above was taken in Sabah Borneo and at the Rainforest Discovery Center in Sandakan. At times, these tiger orchids are seen growing on trees too.
